Welcoming 2SLGBTQIA+ Students

As students, faculty, and staff, we're all here to learn, and we're all part of a community. Let's give each other the respect that we want to receive.

We come from different places, we have different religions and beliefs, and we all think differently, but we should have a home here. During your time at Acadia, members of our 2SLGBTQIA+ community will be your friends, classmates, teammates, and teachers. Let's all continue to build a campus community that's fair, understanding, and open-minded.

Supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community

We strive to make all students feel safe and welcome. If you would like someone to talk to or if you have questions about your sexuality or identity, we encourage you to consider speaking with the fantastic people on campus at the Counselling Centre or Peer Support, including Acadia Pride. You may also find the Valley Youth Project and Nova Scotia Health Authority's Pride Health to be of interest.

Our Policy

Policy Against Harassment & Discrimination

All members of the University community have the right to learn and work in an environment free
from discrimination, sexual harassment, and personal harassment. Personal harassment, sexual
harassment, and discrimination are demeaning and degrading behaviours. These can affect an
individual’s self-esteem and can have a negative impact on performance at work or in class. These
can make an individual feel angry, powerless, and fearful.

Sexual Violence Policy

Acadia University is committed to creating and maintaining an environment free from Sexual Violence and to promoting greater awareness of Sexual Violence through education. Acadia will create an environment where sexual violence is not tolerated, where everyone is responsible to take action to prevent against acts of Sexual Violence, and where complainants choose their course of action (subject to the necessary disclosure of confidential information relating to incidents of Sexual Violence in specific circumstances as outlined in this document), and where complainants are supported and treated with respect.

Chosen Name and Identity Policy

Acadia University both aspires, and commits, to principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The University believes that the learning, teaching and research environment should be accessible and affirming to the individuals that comprise it. As an individual’s identity is at the very core of their personal experience, Acadia affirms that a person’s chosen identity will be used whenever possible to ensure a welcoming, inclusive, academic and living environment.

Please visit the Registrar's Office for more information and the Name Change Form.

Gender Inclusive Washrooms

The Equity Office maintains a list of gender inclusive/gender neutral washrooms on campus.

Equity Office

Our Equity Officer is available to students, staff, and faculty. The fundamental objective of the Equity Office is to prevent discrimination, sexual harassment, and personal harassment from occurring. You may also lodge a complaint against a student via our Non-Academic Judicial Process.
